Care Tips
Light
- Crotons develop their best leaf color when kept in bright light
- Outdoors, they prefer partial sun, with shade for several hours each day
- Full midday sun in the summer can dry and damage the plants
Water
- Crotons need regular moisture and do best in well-drained, organically rich, slightly acid soil
- Although consistently dry soil can damage the plants, they also do poorly in areas where water tends to stand and soil is often soggy
- Less water during winter months to allow the plant a period of rest
Fertilizer
- Need weekly fertilizing during the growing season
- Fertilizer should be cut back during the winter months to allow the plant a period of rest
- A balanced fertilizer formula is fine for these plants, but they can also benefit from occasional feeding with an acid-type formula designed for azaleas
Temperature & Humidity
- Prefer temperatures between 15°C to 30°C
- Keep it outdoors during warm weather in cool regions
- Crotons cannot tolerate temperatures below about 7°C for any length of time, and should be moved indoors when weather cools
- Since they are semi-tropical, they also prefer a humid environment
