Care Tips
Light
- Can tolerate high light but keep them away from windows with the strong sun coming in or they’ll burn in no time flat
- The darker green varieties of aglaonema can grow in near shade, while the variegated varieties require brighter light
Water
- Water thoroughly in the summer and mist the plant often to raise the humidity
- During the winter, reduce watering but do not let the plant dry out completely
Soil
- Any good quality (preferably organic) potting soil is fine
- Keep soil well drained
Fertilizer
- Feed your aglaonema with slow-release pellets or a liquid fertilizer during the growing season
- Don’t fertilize in late fall or winter because that’s their time for rest
Temperature & Humidity
- If your home is comfortable for you, it’ll be so for your houseplants too
- Just be sure to keep your Aglaonemas away from any cold drafts as well as air conditioning or heating vents
Pests and Disease
- It is generally pests and diseases free
- However, when grown in poor conditions it might be attacked by some common pests like mealy bugs, aphids, spider mites and sometimes white-flies
- For treating pests use organic pesticide or insecticidal soap
Repotting and Propagation
- Aglaonemas are slow growing and will only need repotting every other year
- They are also generally low-growing plants, so their trunks will be revealed very gradually
- Aglaonemas are not typically propagated by home growers
- You can, however, divide the plants during repotting
- Small shoots can also be potted as individual plants
Pruning
- Not much is needed
- The main reasons to prune this plant are for propagation or to prune off the occasional lower yellow leaf or spent flower
Pests
- Keep an eye out for aphids, scale, mealybugs & spider mites
- Identify and treat it early on
Pet Safety
- Chinese Evergreens are considered to be toxic to pets
Grower’s Tips
- Due to its high humidity requirements, some growers consider aglaonema to be a greenhouse plant
- It will do best in the warm, humid, and bright environment of a greenhouse
- But can be successfully grown indoors by coming as close as possible to these conditions
- The number one rule to remember with aglaonema is to keep it warm and moist
